Livermore Sleep Apnea Treatment

Central sleep apnea happens when the brain fails to deliver crucial signals to the breathing muscles, while obstructive sleep apnea occurs when air cannot pass through the nose or mouth despite the body's attempts to breathe. Obstructive sleep apnea is considerably more common than you might think, and it's easy to treat with the help of your general care physician and dentist. Severe early morning headaches, afternoon drowsiness, and insomnia are all common symptoms of obstructive sleep apnea. Our staff, fortunately, has the required equipment and knowledge to treat sleep apnea in a variety of methods. Our patients' total health is our top goal at Smile Line Dentistry.

Do I have Sleep Apnea?

In the United States, sleep apnea is one of the most frequently misdiagnosed health problems. A physician must diagnose sleep apnea, but our sleep center collaborates with your doctor to develop a treatment plan that is unique to you.

These are some of the most prevalent symptoms of sleep apnea. Give us a call and we will collaborate with your primary care physician to find a permanent solution to your problems.

  • Snoring
  • Waking up due to trouble breathing
  • Have high blood pressure
  • Trouble staying asleep
  • Use a CPAP device
  • Feel tired during the day
Why Treat Sleep Apnea

If sleep apnea is detected, it is critical to get medical help. A sufferer can stop breathing many times each hour, which can swiftly escalate into a life-threatening crisis. When the soft tissue at the back of the patient's throat collapses into the airway, obstructive sleep apnea ensues. The tongue then slips back into the throat, tightening the blockage and preventing oxygen from reaching the lungs.

When the chest, diaphragm, and abdomen compete for air, the condition intensifies. To remove the soft tissue from the airway, the patient must awaken from a deep sleep, typically by clenching or grinding their teeth.

Because sleep apnea causes carbon dioxide levels in the blood to rise as oxygen levels fall, the heart is forced to work harder and quicker to compensate for the shortage of oxygen. Several significant heart-related disorders have been connected to sleep apnea. As a result, we undertake an airway evaluation on all of our patients and offer a complimentary sleep screening if possible airway collapse.

Sleep Apnea Treatment

Initially, the dentist will want to do tests to investigate, collaborate with your health care physician, and determine the best course of action. Our team can provide a variety of treatment choices, which are mostly dependent on the precise diagnosis and the patient's overall condition. We may counsel the patient to stop smoking, drinking alcohol, and other habits that worsen sleep apnea.

The gold standard for treating severe obstructive sleep apnea is a CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure). Many people, however, are CPAP intolerant or their symptoms aren't severe enough for their doctor to advocate using this device. Some less invasive solutions are available to treat CPAP intolerant people and those with milder types. Dental devices that gently nudge the lower jaw forward are particularly successful at keeping the tongue from obstructing the central airway. These dental gadgets are mild, easy to use, and frequently save patients from undergoing unnecessary surgery.
